Research blog: Music Video Conventions
The song that we chose was Black or White by Michael Jackson. Jackson stated he wrote this song to share his experiences of being a black man in today's society. Also his experiences with racism in the industry and real world. He knew that music was a great way to express yourself. That's why he wrote a whole song dedicated to the issue, so the message could be easily heard. His plan worked and that song was on the top charts. The song stayed on the charts for seven weeks and now is one of Jackson's most popular songs. This song leads to many controversies because of its meaning. Back then and still today people are being judged and discriminated against for the color of their skin. Equality has not been achieved and we don't know when it will be. Jackson's song not only has a great meaning but was also lyrically amazing.
Conventions: The genre of the song is pop. Being considered the King of Pop, Michaels music videos have become the backbone of pop. Some common conventions you would be in a pop music video would be many dancing scenes. Jackson is known for having one of the most unique dances of the '80s and '90s. Many pop songs today also include lots of dancing and partying scenes. Examples would be Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez, Lady Gaga. Another common convention would be the wide variety of costumes and props. In one music video, the artist could have 6 costumes and props and be in so many different locations. Since pop music is on the more upbeat side, most music videos feature many different colors and bright lights. The goal for most of them is to put you in a good mood and make you want to dance.
